GuriGuru

December 6, 2010

Gary Kafoa is a proud indigenous man from the banks of the Tweed River whose father was a local tribal elder. Born and bred by the river he spent 30 years as a professional fisherman, and he also has a long history as a local musician. Using a mixture of traditional and modern instrumentation, Gary sings of what was passed down to him by his elders and contemporary issues that affect us all today:  and trying to step outside traditional rock song structures has meant mixing

didgeridoo with modern dance beats and his own funk percussion techniques. The result is a new dimension in Indigenous storytelling born in the unique musical culture of the NSW North Coast.

Dr Greg is a veteran of over 40 years on bass with bands of every hue from deep funk to space-rock, and his lifelong interest in ethnic musical forms means he can supply unique groove assistance to the project.

Together, they are

Sunday 19th Dec – Oka at QPAC

November 29, 2010

Firstly Oka would like to show their support and respect to all indigenous peoples around the world striving to keep their cultures alive. A special mention to all custodians of this land we call home – Australia. The core of Oka is Stu (DidgeriStu) and Chris. The Oka sound is deeply rooted in the laid back coastal style of our home. I guess it makes people feel how they do when they visit here chillaxed. Here is a collection of words that we put to together because we always get asked to describe our music: “a fusion of eclectic world sounds, roots, dub, reggae, jazz and organic electronica”… yep it’s a lot of words. My favourite description though comes from a new Oka fan in Canada: “i have to say, your music is like nothing i’ve ever heard. love it! techno-folk-aboriginal-jungle-hippie-rock? damn.”
