Evolution – Diego Zambrano & Friends

Turbine Platform, Brisbane Powerhouse

Saturday 3rd September 2011, 5.00 – 7.00 PM

EVOLUTION is a very different performance of Latin music! In this show you will experience the whole Latin world full of art including dance, acting and music. This is not another “Latin gig”, what makes it different is the way percussion is played – not with traditional drums but with common things.

Definitely EVOLUTION is a performance you can not miss!

Diego Zambrano began his musical journey when he was only 10 years old, influenced by musicians like David Weckl, Dennis Chambers and Alvaro Lopez. He also is very influenced by Latin and Colombian rhythms. He started to play with a Gospel band when he was 13 years old; showing his great abilities to play the drums. At the age of 17, he recorded his first album called “Palabra Fiel”. Diego has participated in several events in Australia, such as, Multicultural Festival (Brisbane), Colombian National Day (Brisbane), Multicultural Festival (Canberra), Darling Harbour Fiesta (Sydney), Planet (Brisbane), Mackay Festival of Arts (Mackay), Fete de la Musique (Brisbane), among others.

Diego brings along with him Pablo Matus, Miguel Calderon & Diego Rincon.

Pablo Matus (Percussion, vocals)
From one of the most fruitful lands of Latin America, Chilean-born, Pablo is a Latin Percussionist and Drummer. He has performed Afro-Cuban music in well-known bands around the Latin American events and clubs in Australia. Pablo is a recognised figure within the Latin American Salsa community throughout Australia.

Miguel Calderon (Piano, vocals)
Mexican-born, Miguel, is a pianist brought up in with Latin America traditions and with a passion for Cuban and Mexican music. He was from the early age exposed to influences of both Latin and classical Schools of piano playing, where he studied with some well illustrated names.

Diego Rincon (Bass and Percussion)
Diego is a bass player born in Bogotá, Colombia. His influences are wide ranging, including the traditional music of his country, Latin music, classical, jazz, Latin Jazz, soul, disco and reggae.

Diego’s Group:

Diego Rincon – Bass and percussion
Pablo Matus – Percussion
Ingrid Leal – Violin, flute, vocal
Miguel Calderon – Piano
Karen Carrillo – Dancer
Diego Zambrano – Percussion, Vocal
Mario Obando – Dancer
Eszter Kiss – Vocal

EVOLUTION shows how we have lost the communication with our families and communities, and also how important it is to have hope, even when life is a bit hard sometimes. This is why it is called EVOLUTION – because we CAN overcome no matter the situation … all you need is love for each other.

Manju Mehta

July 13, 2011

The First Lady of Sitar

As part of her first Australian tour, Manju Mehta, described as the First Lady of Sitar, will be performing Indian Classical music in the style made famous by her guru, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Her knowledge of ‘raga’ and her ability to breathe life and creativity into her music whilst staying true to her lineage has earned her enormous world-wide praise and respect. Indian sitar maestro Manju Mehta will draw from ancient musical traditions and lineage to present music with intensity, depth and beauty. Joining her are the prodigious talents of Adelaide´s own Jay Dabgar on tabla, and Manju’s disciple Josh Bennett on sitar.   An extraordinary musical journey.

Saturday 2nd July-Planet

June 27, 2011

flyer_planet

Don’t miss our July Planet from 5pm-7pm at Brisbane Powerhouse, featuring Shen Findell (tabla), Soumva Chakraverty (sarod) and Saikat Bhattacharya (sitar).
Since being initiated into the Benares Gharana of tabla by one of the great old masters of the style in 1994, Shen Flindell has grown to become one of Australia’s leading tabla players, and is also very active in the thriving Indian music community of Japan. He is best known for his beautiful sound and supportive accompaniment, and has released 4 CDs ranging from Indian classical santoor to Tibetan world fusion. Shen loves bringing people together to unite through music, whether it’s playing with his many young students or collaborating with top musicians from around the world.

Soumya has been playing the Sarod, the north Indian fretless lute for the last thirty two years.  He studied music under Pandit Samarendra Nath Sikdar, a senior disciple of the legendary sarod maestro, Radhika Mohan Maitra of the Shahjahanpur school of music.  His solid technique and thorough grounding in the roots of his own music notwithstanding, his interests also lie in exploring the commonalities of North Indian Classical music with other music styles. His playing style has been greatly influenced by the likes of his guru and other masters of his Gharana. It highlights a perfect blend between the Rababiya and Gayaki styles that is unique to the Shahjahanpur Gharana. He is both a purist, who likes to maintain the authentic forms of the Ragas as passed down the generations of Ustads (maestros), and at the same time, he likes to experiment with other forms of Indian as well as world music, to find common strands of melodic expression.

Saikat Bhattacharya has been playing the Sitar for over seventeen years. Playing the sitar is his passion and devotion, beginning in the early nineties under the supervision of his Guru Pandit Manilal Nag of Calcutta, in India. Pandit Manilal Nag comes from the Vishnupur Gharana, which is the one and only school of music that originated in Bengal with its roots, embedded in the “Senia Gharana” of Delhi. Since coming to Australia, he has regularly performed in various programs like the Queensland Multicultural Music Festival and the Woodford Folk Festival.   By chance, visiting artist Soumya Chakraverty (sarod) and Brisbane resident Saikat Bhattacharya (sitar) were schoolmates at Calcutta Boys School in 1986. So come and enjoy a very special 25th anniversary school reunion!

Home Festival 2011

May 5, 2011

Sun 19 June 2011 Home Festival
11am to 8.30pm at Kangaroo Point

We can’t wait to welcome you HOME – Sunday 19th June!

Due to the consistent rain we received in the week leading up to 9th April we chose to postpone our Home Festival so as not to damage our precious site, Raymond Park.  We’re working towards our new date, Sunday 19th June which is a crisp time of the year but more importantly a seasonally dry time.

Stay in touch with us for up to date info on our facebook page @ Home Festival.

The inaugural Home Festival at Raymond Park, Kangaroo Point, will be the community’s ‘home’ for a day. Locals are being invited to take ownership of the festival, which has been instigated by a group of people with a passion for community, music and local culture.

Home Festival is an opportunity to celebrate our common ground, a springboard to connections, fun, confidence, humour and a stronger belief that we live in a healthy, positive community. Welcome Home!
