Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre Newsletter For Sept 2011

From the Desk
Where has the year gone???  I can hardly believe we are sending out the September e-news already!  I have just returned from a freezing week in New Zealand, and even the Ekka winds feel warm by comparison.  As we slip quickly into the final quarter of the year, I have been reflecting on all that has developed in “BEMAC-land” over the past eight months: great Planet series, new Board of Management, three successful festivals delivered, and range of workshops for women in the music industry lot’s of internal structural changes and a heap of grants written, and a new strategic plan developed; and I feel like that’s only half of what we want to achieve between now and the end of December! The next four months will be extremely busy on all fronts, from a performance perspective; we have Manju Mehta touring from India this week, followed by Planet, Columbian-style the week after.  The team are busy finalising the program on behalf of the Queensland Multicultural Festival and then we have three more Planet’s, an intimate ceremonial performance at the Gold Coast Arts Centre, the Anishinnabek Northern Lights, Canadian Indian performers tour and our own signature event World By Night, all interspersed with some song-writing and grant-writing workshops.  We also have two very exciting projects starting this month:  Her Hands; which will work with women from a range of diverse backgrounds to develop skills around their existing traditional hand-craft and textile-based work.  This project will result in an exhibition at the end of the year.  The other project we to be delivered in partnership with Gold Coast Magic is She Says… which will work with a group of refugee and migrant women to develop writing skills, I am very exciting to see the stories that will develop out of this process.  I look forward to seeing you at some of that!
Over the next three months, we are also working closely with the University of Queensland to undertake a research project around the arts and multiculturalism, which we hope will assist us to better meet the needs of both sectors.  In light of the new Multicultural Policy and Action Plan, Queensland has an opportunity to lead in this area, and we have been contacted from our colleagues interstate who are very interested in developments in this space in Queensland.  I would encourage you to provide some input into the National Cultural Policy to see a nation-wide reflection.
In August 2011, the federal Minister for Regional Development and the Arts, Simon Crean, released the National Cultural Policy discussion paper for public comment. The paper sets out the direction the Australian Government is heading in developing a ten-year vision and goals for the policy, which “will reflect the important role that arts and creativity play in the daily lives of all Australians, and will help to integrate arts and cultural policy within our broader social and economic goals”.
You are encouraged to read the discussion paper and submit your ideas to the Australian Government about what you would like the National Cultural Policy to look like. Visit www.culture.arts.gov.au to either fill out a quick 5-minute survey or download a form to write a more detailed submission. Comments are due by 21 October 2011.

Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre Newsletter For August 2011

From the Desk
July was a pretty big month for the Multicultural sector and the State Government in general, with The Premier and Minister for Multicultural Affairs launching their new Multicultural Policy and three year action plan. It is a huge step forward and very encouraging move in light of recent international debate around multiculturalism.

We of course have a great line-up for you this month, with a particular highlight being Planet. We approached Chinese Ehru player Nicholas Ng to host the August Planet, and wow, what a line-up of friends he will be bringing along. The event includes Brisbane favourites, Kim Cunio, Tunji Beier, Jordan Stamos and more… Definitely a concert not to be missed; see you at Brisbane Powerhouse from 5pm!

Don’t you just love Brisbane weather? I have been catching the ferry to work the past few weeks, and thoroughly enjoying the beauty of the river and also our lovely Queensland sun! This month, we have Josh Bennet and Jay Dabgar visiting from Adelaide, with touring Indian sitar player, Manju Mehta – I am hoping the weather stays as nice as it has been so they can enjoy their visit as much as we will enjoy hosting them. Described as the ‘First Lady of Sitar’, Manju will deliver an amazing performance at two different shows; one at Brisbane Powerhouse, and the other at Coolangatta. Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre Newsletter For June 2011
From the Desk
Well it is e-news time and starting this month, I would like to make a special mention and give a big thank you to some of the amazing staff and volunteers we have in the office on a weekly basis, keeping the BEMAC wheels turning.   As a very small organization we rely heavily of volunteers to assist us to deliver all the things we do day-in and day-out.   First cab off the rank is Gladys!   We all joke the place falls apart if she is not around, but there is more than an ounce of truth in that statement.  If you have booked the venue, paid your membership or wanted to be paid for a performance, chances are Gladys took care of it, along with all the other jobs around the office that really keep us sailing along!  Gladys is the one who will be still there with me at 9 o’clock at night, finishing off those ‘can’t wait until tomorrow’ jobs.  I would like to say a huge thank you to Gladys for her dedication and hard work, sense of humor and motherly love she shares so freely!

This past month we have been so very busy in BEMAC, with preparations for Planet and Zillmere Festival – One Place, Many Cultures on this Saturday, our AGM on the 20th and Fete de La Musique on the 21st!  Whilst the events will be amazing, and I hope to see you there; I would also encourage you to come along to our Annual General Meeting to be held at Yungaba from 6pm on the 20th.  This is a very important milestone for the organization, with a majority of Management Committee members finishing their 3 year terms.  It is a great opportunity to hear about the organizations achievements in 2009 and the plans for 2010 and beyond.  If you are not yet a member, you can apply via the website www.bemac.org.au.  It will also be a great opportunity to pay tribute to those Committee Members who have seen BEMAC through some of its most trying times over the past few years.

Until next month, Jo

Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre Newsletter For July 2011
From the Desk
The newsletter is a little late out this month, but worth the wait, with an amazing array of events available for your enjoyment over the next couple of months.  A couple of highlights from my end would definitely be Planet on the 6th August at Brisbane Powerhouse.  If you have been to a Planet so far this year, you will have noticed, we have changed the format a little, inviting one of our artist members to ‘host’ the gig, and letting them program the show for us!  It has worked beautifully so far, and I this one will be amazing, with Nicholas Ng hosting an amazing array of his friends, a very special treat for the audience.   The Columbian Food Festival is on again, this time celebrating 10 years, but also this will be the last time this event will be able to be held at Yungaba, with the development progressing quickly and all external access winding down from September.
In other news, BEMAC held its AGM on the 20th June, and I would like to thank to out-going Committee members, Rossven Naidoo, Michael Cohen, Gayle Kimmins and Rosemary Easterbrook.  Your contributions over many years is much appreciated.  Continuing members include Cat Samford-Beechey and Vladis Kosse; and I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the joining members as listed below.  It is a strong and diverse team, and I look forward to working with them to deliver on the organisation’s objectives over the coming years! President: Dilshani Wheerasinghe; Vice-President: Thomas Dick; Secretary: Elda Bartoz; Treasurer: Michael Krafft; General members: Kerry Brown, Stefan Treyvaud and Ben Farr-Wharton.
