This is the first time that the celebrated choreography skills of Wright and Parmenter have ever been presented in the same work. Tama Ma also incorporates film, using the short film, Pito, by film makers Mark Summerville and Heather Lee. The magical soundscape is created by Musical Director, Eden Mulholland. Premiered in 2008 at Tempo Dance Festival in Auckland, Tama Ma played to sell-out crowds and rave reviews and has since toured the major centres in New Zealand as well as performing in Australia, USA and China.

Arash Zanganeh was born in Tehran in 1976. He is a Persian percussionist, composer and teacher whose work draws on Sufi traditions and Iranian folkloric music from regions such as Kurdistan, Kerend, Kermanshan, Systan and Balouchestan. Arash’s interest in world music was ignited by his participation in the Oriental Music Exchange (Tajali Program) in India sponsored by the Iranian Cultural Attaché in New Delhi in 2000.
In the same year his recording with the great female mystic Abdeh Parwin, and the recording project Rumi in Amir Khusrau’s Land in honour of Mevlana Jaleddin and Amir Khusrau Dehlavi in India, also inspired his passion for devotional music.

| 2011 has already been a huge year for so many Queenslanders. Our thoughts and best wishes to all those affected by the recent flooding across the state, BEMAC was very lucky, considering our close proximity to the river, to escape damage, unfortunately a number of our artists, volunteers and staff were not so lucky, but all have reportedly come through the big clean-up relatively intact. We did have to evacuate and my apologies to anyone who has been trying to get through over the past couple of weeks as we put everything back together. We are all back at work now and its full-steam ahead into the rest of what will be a great year! Planet 2011, at Brisbane Powerhouse, kicks off this Saturday with Dva raga space! We have programmed this first Planet in conjunction with the annual Festival of Tibet, it should be a fantastic weekend, there is more on this below, as well as a great range of events and opportunities for artists and audiences alike…As we roll out our 24th year, we are looking ahead to 2012 which will be our 25th Birthday and a huge milestone for both BEMAC and Queensland in the multicultural arts arena. We are very keen to hear from anyone who has had any connection with BEMAC during the last 24 years, whether as committee member, community group, artists or audience; especially in the early days when the organisation started. We are gathering archival information, stories, photographs, etc which we will use in some way in our celebration of BEMAC’s big birthday. Please feel free to send us an email if you can help in anyway, admin@bemac.org.au. |

Thus the scale is made up of twenty two microtonal intervals (shrutis) and the significance of the swaras depends on their position in the microtonal scale. The swaras are named respectively Shadja (Sa), Rishabha (Re), Gandhara (Ga), Madhyyama (Ma), Panchama (Pa), Dhaivata (Dha), and Nishada (Ni). He has been featured at many festivals held at Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane Festival, the Queensland Music Festival’s ‘Spiegeltent’. Jason’s trio will take you on a journey through the exotic world of MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira), one of the greatest examples of cultural fusion, which has been described by the Courier-Mail as “perhaps a Brazilian-style answer to the Buena Vista Social Club”.
JASON MACHADO TRIO
Jason Machado has been performing Brazilian popular music for over 20 years on both the eastern coasts of Australia and Brazil, singing a selection of the wonderful songs from Brazil – a country famous for its extraordinary music and its sensuous, melodious language. On voice and seven-string guitar Jason Machado is joined by cellist Danielle Bentley and drummer Massimo Sportelli, who together weave the intricacies of those buoyant samba rhythms.
“…chilled and sophisticated, providing an opportunity for couples to slow dance…perhaps a Brazilian-style answer to the Buena Vista Social Club.” Rachel Langford – The Courier Mail.
MÚSICA POPULAR BRASILEIRA
MPB or Música Popular Brasileira is one of the greatest examples of cultural fusion as expressed through music and song. This broad style draws from a huge array of global sounds – from 19th century salon music and lundu (an African song form) to jazz, carnival marching music, samba, rock and reggae, etc. together with the Brazilian way of making music – positive, uplifting and joyful – utilizing melody, harmony and rhythm in a unique way.
This unique combination of instruments combines with voice and guitar to form the JASON MACHADO TRIO that will take you on a journey through the exotic world of MPB…
